The Ultimate Fly Fishing Road Trip: Kurt & Tom’s Western Adventure

Some guests leave a lasting impression… Kurt and Tom are two of them.
Friends since high school, these two longtime fishing buddies set off on a three-week fly fishing road trip across the American West to celebrate their retirements. Lucky for us, Windy Waters was one of their carefully chosen stops.
They stayed two nights and in that short time, made a lasting impact. From the moment they arrived, it was clear they were on the trip of a lifetime. Big smiles, contagious laughter, and an obvious love for the sport of fly fishing. Within minutes, we were trading stories about rivers, families, and favorite fishing memories.
Their trip was planned down to the finest detail complete with a paper atlas (yes, a real one!), handwritten notes, daily itineraries, river CFS readings, local fly shops, guide recommendations, and even where to grab a good bite to eat. The rental car was packed to the gills with gear, snacks, and just about everything two anglers might need on the road.
Each evening, they grilled up mouthwatering dinners and sipped homemade Manhattans from plastic RV rental cups, and I swear, better than any craft cocktail I’ve had in town!
As you’d expect, they quickly made friends with another guest, also an avid fly angler. Soon, they were swapping tips and tales well into the night that included bits about the Grey Reef, Miracle Mile, Caldwell Access, and Fremont Canyon. The next morning? Up before sunrise to put it all into action.
These are the nights we love at Windy Waters: picnic table conversations, shared stories, riverside photos, and the easy camaraderie that only fly fishing can spark.
Kurt and Tom—thanks for making us part of your journey. Here’s to more road trips, big catches, and stories yet to be told. We hope to see you back at Windy Waters soon!
